BSW Custom Bowstring - Flemish Spliced - Custom-made to your specifications
This custom bowstring is only made to order and is a special choice for archers who want more individuality.
The string is made by hand using the traditional ‘Flemish splice’ method, in which the end loops (‘eyes’) of the bowstring are formed by artfully intertwining and twisting the individual strands of the string. It is a very old and proven technique that is particularly popular for traditional bows and especially custom strings.
Instead of wrapping or gluing the bowstring strands to form the loops, Flemish splicing involves dividing the strands into two or more bundles. These bundles are then intertwined over a certain length and twisted at the same time. The ends of the individual strands run to a point and are ‘hidden’ in the intertwining so that they cannot come loose.
There are two proven options available as string material: Fast Flight and Dacron.
Flemish splice
- Traditional look: Flemish spliced strings have a characteristic, handmade look that is appreciated by many archers, especially when used with traditional longbows or recurve bows.
- Elasticity and damping: Due to the type of weave, these strings are often slightly more elastic than machine-wound strings. This additional stretch can help reduce hand shock and protect the bow when shooting. This is particularly advantageous for older bows or those that are not designed for modern, very low-stretch materials.
- Ease of repair: In the event of a single broken strand, it is theoretically easier to repair the string as the strands are not glued together. In practice, however, the entire string is often replaced if major damage occurs.
- Noise: They tend to be slightly quieter than tightly wound strings as the braiding dampens vibrations better.
- Adaptability: The technology allows for a high degree of customisation in terms of material mix and number of strands.
Dacron strings
- Material: Dacron is the trade name for a synthetic polyester fibre material (polyethylene terephthalate, PET).
- Elongation: Dacron strings have a comparatively high elongation. When the string is cocked and then released, it stretches more and then contracts again.
- Gentle effect: Due to their elasticity, Dacron strings are gentler on the bow. The energy transfer to the limbs is more dampened, which is particularly advantageous for older bows or bows without reinforced tips (limb tips).
- Noise: They are generally quieter than Fast Flight strings, as the greater damping produces less vibration.
- Durability: Dacron strings are very robust and durable, but can ‘wear out’ over time and may need to be re-twisted more often to maintain the brace height.
- Area of use: Ideal for traditional bows (longbows, recurve bows without Fast Flight-compatible tips), older bows and beginners, as they are more forgiving of shooting errors and put less strain on the bow.
Fast Flight strings
- Material: Fast Flight is a generic term for modern high-performance string materials. These often consist of polyethylene fibres with extremely high tensile strength.
- Stretch: Fast Flight strings have very little to no stretch. The energy is transferred to the arrow with almost no loss.
- Speed: The low stretch results in higher arrow speed and a flatter trajectory, as the energy of the bow is used more efficiently.
- Strain on the bow: Due to the direct energy transfer, Fast Flight strings place greater strain on the limbs and tips. The tips of the bow must be specially reinforced to withstand these forces. Bows that are not marked as ‘Fast Flight compatible’ may be damaged when using such a string.
- Noise: Fast Flight strings can be louder and produce more vibration than Dacron strings because less energy is absorbed by the string itself. This can be reduced by using dampers on the string and limbs.
- Durability: They are extremely tear-resistant and durable, retain their length very well and rarely need to be re-twisted.
- Area of application: Standard for modern recurve bows, compound bows and all bows that are explicitly marked as ‘Fast Flight compatible’. They are the preferred choice for performance-oriented archers.
The choice between Dacron and Fast Flight therefore depends largely on the bow used, the preferences of the archer and the desired performance goals.
The colour design of the string can be customised. It is possible to choose up to three different colours for the strands of the string. In addition, the colour of the centre wrap can be customised to achieve a harmonious overall look or to add visual accents.
