Always Keep an Eye on the Target – Archery Targets
The range of accessories for bows and crossbows is very extensive. The selection of targets alone is remarkably large, and the different versions are necessary. Not every target is suitable for every shooter. While simple and cost-effective solutions are quite sufficient for the hobby archer, the experienced sport shooter will prefer high-quality products that are used especially in competitions and training. At archery-shop.co.uk, you'll find a wide selection of suitable products, ranging from simple straw targets, to targets with animal motifs, to 3D animals in various sizes and shapes.
Which Target is Right for Me?
Answering this question largely depends on the discipline and distance you shoot. The different targets serve quite different fields, although you can, of course, practice with any of them. First, you must distinguish between targets for bows and targets for crossbows. The most popular are paper target faces of various sizes suitable for the shooting distance, shooting bags, shooting cubes, and 3D foam targets. The latter are usually modeled on real objects or animals.
Archery: Four Different Options
(1) The Classic Target
One of the most common disciplines in archery in this country is target archery. It is practiced in Olympic competitions and has therefore gained widespread recognition through worldwide television broadcasts. Here, you shoot on a free and flat area, such as a meadow or a sports field, and in winter in a shooting hall at the target. This term actually only refers to the material that catches the arrow. It can be foam squares or circles, straw mats, or bales of wood wool, but also targets made of Karphos or Stramit. The material must be hard enough that the arrows do not sink too deeply, but also soft enough that they are not damaged or even broken.
In addition, there is also a target face hanging on the target itself. These are traditionally made of paper with various colored rings, which bring a certain number of points for hits. From the inside out, there are ten rings arranged in pairs in five colors: gold, red, blue, black, and white. The origin of this type of target comes from 12th century England, where people shot at wagon wheels – hence also the dartboard. The size of the face is determined by the shooting distance. Beginners can practice with especially large targets.
(2) Field Targets
Similar but slightly different are the targets for field archery. Here, you shoot on uneven terrain, sometimes uphill, sometimes downhill, and between trees. The distance to the target is known to you only at half of the targets - and here lies a crucial difference to the WA competitions, because there you always know exactly how far you are from the target. The faces for field targets are black with a yellow circle in the middle. This discipline also offers championships at all levels. In terms of materials for the target backing, you have the same options as in classical target archery.
(3) 3D Targets
Something special are our 3D targets: animals, pitchers, bottles, and similar objects. Unlike the above-mentioned targets, they are also excellent for crossbows. Especially the animal dummies are intended for hunting simulations. The external circumstances are similar to field archery, but here comes the aspect of hunting. This trend originally comes from the USA, where hunting with a bow and crossbow is allowed. During the closed season, hunters train with the realistic, three-dimensional dummies, and soon a whole new archery discipline developed from this. With this, you get particularly close to the original use of bow and arrow, as hunting was necessary for survival in the past. Today, the sport of archery is growing in popularity.
Our 3D targets are made of a special foam material that has so-called self-healing properties. The foam closes by itself when the arrow or bolt is pulled out, so that reuse is easily possible. The soft material also has arrow-preserving properties.
(4) Shooting Cubes
Shooting cubes? Yes, you read that right! A classic is our 3D cube from RINEHART, which has targets painted on many different sides, allowing it to be shot from various directions. The soft foam is just like our other 3D animals, arrow-preserving and self-sealing, so you will enjoy this special target for a long time. Just hang it up and start shooting! The shooting cube is also suitable for bows and crossbows.
Crossbow Shooting: Especially Robust Targets
(1) The Classic Target
We also offer classic targets for crossbow shooters with the printed paper face that has the same colored rings. But you can also get animal prints from us. The difference to targets for bows lies in their strength. Crossbows often have a significantly higher penetrating power and therefore require very thick and robust supports for safety.
At BSW, you will find foam discs with wooden frames that can withstand up to 225 lbs draw weight or 350 fps speed with crossbows. Countless individual layers and plies protect your bolts and arrows but also withstand the most extreme demands. The large targets weigh only 10 kg and are therefore comparatively light. This allows you to transport them effortlessly despite their size. The bolts are easy to pull out, and thanks to the wooden frame, the target stands without a separate stand. On each side, you can place up to three spots for aiming according to your wishes.
(2) Shooting Bags
In addition to shooting cubes and other 3D targets, which are also perfectly suitable for crossbows, we also have shooting bags in our range. This type of target is particularly easy to transport and can be hung up if desired. Various printed target elements make the training varied. Of course, your bolts are preserved and are easy to pull out. Even after repeated use, our shooting bags show a stopping effect like on the first day.
Accessories for Targets: Backstop Nets and Mats
The highest commandment in archery is safety. It is important that you always ensure not to injure anyone - therefore, the aspect of safety should especially flow into your considerations of where and how you set up your new target. Arrow catch nets or arrow catch mats are hung behind the target so that every arrow and bolt that does not hit the target is caught, instead of flying unrestrained into the area behind it. Thus, you significantly minimize the risk of accidents. We have tested various products for you - in our category of arrow catch nets you will find more about this. The test winner is the mats from Stronghold Targets.

Target for Archery - Which is the Right One?
The range of accessories for the bow or crossbow is very extensive. The selection of targets alone is remarkably large, and the different versions are necessary. Not every target is suitable for every archer. While simpler and more cost-effective solutions are already completely sufficient for the hobby archer, the experienced sport shooter will prefer high-quality products as targets that are used especially in competitions or training. At archery-shop.co.uk, you'll find a wide selection of suitable products, ranging from simple straw targets to targets with animal motifs, to 3D animals in various sizes and shapes.
Always Keep an Eye on the Target
Classic straw targets are often already printed with a ring motif. Modern targets usually use a target face made of robust paper with rings or animal motifs. In competitions, ultimately the age of the shooter, the practiced archery discipline, and competition distance determine the type, shape, and size of the target.
A particularly appealing target is our 3D animals. These animal dummies awaken the hunter in you and lend a completely new thrill to shooting with a bow or crossbow. Feel the hunting fever and train your instincts. While hunting with the bow was necessary for survival in the past, shooting with bow and arrow today belongs to a sport with growing influx. What is your favorite target - the conventional target with ring motif or the realistic 3D animal? The animal dummies are made of resistant foam material and have arrow-preserving properties. Targets for archery and crossbow shooting are available in different material concepts. Choose between models made of straw, Karphos, various foams, or Styroline.
Versatile Targets for Archery
In standard disciplines competitions, conventional targets are the first choice. 3D animal dummies also train the accuracy of a shooter but under completely different conditions. Discover the comprehensive selection of targets and 3D animals for your bow or crossbow in our online shop.
