What is a longbow?
The longbow is a traditional bow that is usually made from a single piece of wood and has a fairly straight, long shape. It was already used in the Stone Age and is still very popular today.
What are the special features of a longbow?
As a rule, a longbow is longer than other types of bow and can be up to 2 meters long. It has a straight shape with no particular curvature or bend. This design used to result in a fairly high tensile force. With new modern materials, however, it is possible to build longbows with a low draw weight, for example for children. The length and design also enable an impressive range and precision when shooting.
What materials are used to make a longbow?
Traditionally, a longbow was made of wood, often yew. Even today, various high-quality types of wood are still used for construction, such as rowan or robinia. However, modern variants can also contain other materials such as fiberglass or carbon. The area of the limbs is often reinforced with a laminate such as carbon.
Are there different types of longbows?
There are different regional variants of longbows, which can vary in shape, size and materials. Some well-known examples are the Welsh longbow, the English longbow and the Japanese yumi. These have developed over the centuries in the respective regions and are also shot using different techniques
Can anyone shoot a longbow?
In principle, anyone can shoot a longbow. Of course, this type of bow, like any other, requires a certain amount of practice to achieve the desired precision and stamina. It is important that you choose a bow with a draw weight that suits you. This will prevent you from adopting the wrong posture, for example if the draw weight is too high, and protect you from possible injury.
How do I shoot a longbow?
A longbow is usually shot traditionally and instinctively. This means that no aiming aids such as a sight or other attachments such as stabilizers are used. Some longbows also have no arrow rest, so the shooters use their thumb as a rest. If you want to shoot, proceed as follows:
- Position your body: stand sideways to the target line, with your legs shoulder-width apart. The foot on the side of the draw arm should be pointing slightly forward, while the other foot should be at an approximate right angle to the direction of the shot. Do not turn your hips or shoulders. Only the head turns towards the target.
- Nocking: Position the arrow with the nock in the string. Use the feather as a guide. It is almost always a different color and should be at a 90° angle to the string. Grip the string with three fingers - the index finger above the arrow and the ring and middle fingers below it.
- Draw the bow: Raise the bow arm while pulling the draw arm back. Draw out to your anchor point. Aim: Keep your eyes on the target and aim the bow in the direction you want to shoot. You can aim instinctively, i.e. just aim at the target and shoot, or aim over the arrowhead.
- Release: Gently release the string without tensing or twitching the bow.
Does a longbow require any special maintenance?
A longbow does not require any special maintenance. However, you should store it unstrung so that the limbs are not worn unnecessarily, as this can also lead to a loss of draw weight. It is best to store and transport it in a bow bag. This protects the bow from scratches, dust and moisture.
